'The Incredibles 2' - Film Review

Released: 13th July 2018.
Directed By: Brad Bird.

HONEY, WHERE'S MY SUPER SUIT?

After the dismal effort of a prequel for the likes of Monsters Inc, I wasn't sure what to expect from this highly anticipated 'Incredibles' sequel. On this occasion though Pixar didn't disappoint.

Overall the film was engaging, charismatic and humorous. All of the elements that made the first film so iconic, make a triumphant return - the powers/characters, the voice actors, the comedic tone. Whilst maintaining these film components, 'The Incredibles 2' manages to keep it fresh with a modern story line and an abundance of new characters. The narrative picks up right where it left off, following the Parr family as they try to find their place in a world where superheroes are deemed unneeded. Focusing more on the character of Elastigirl, the film represents her as an independent, strong, powerhouse female that is meant to endear the public into the reestablishment of superheroes into the city. Much turmoil and villainous antics ensue.

As much joy as it brings me to see Pixar presenting this powerful female character, whilst she is out on missions, we're watching Bob Parr (Mr Incredible) struggle with everyday family life with his children. How does Elastigirl remain to be side-lined as a secondary character?! There seems to still be no equality between the husband and wife pair, which really diminishes the development of Elastigirl's character.

That aside watching Mr Incredible royally mess up is very entertaining, as is the film in general. Edna Mode and Frozone make terrific (darling) comebacks and the new villain is both unexpected and refreshing. The animation from Pixar continues to get better and better and the score in particular for this film was both fitting and energising; lifting those occasional lull moments.

'The Incredibles 2' won the 'People's Choice Award for Favourite Family Movie' in 2018 and it's clear to see why. It's an excellent continuation of the original film and thoroughly enjoyable for all ages. Definitely recommended to all!
