I hate to say it, but this was really disappointing.
Melissa McCarthy has worked hard to gain her status as a comedic actress to be taken seriously, her career has undeniably had it's ups (Bridemaids, The Heat) as well as it's downs (Tammy, The Boss) but her credibility as a comedian has always remained positive. However after this truly lacking film I doubt that many will be pleased with it's offering.
McCarthy and her husband (Ben Falcone - who also Directed the film) wrote the screenplay themselves, this should allow for McCarthy to showcase her skills. I felt the film lacked a strong narrative and was predictable at every new development. This results in McCarthy using slapstick as a 'get out of jail free card' yes it's funny watching someone get hit in the face, but it in this film the comedic technique simply comes across as lazy!
The film also heavily relies on the stereotypes usually found in high school chick-flicks (the pretty mean girl) (the goofy dork) (the hot jock) it all left the film feeling too flat and too familiar.
In all fairness if you're looking for something easy and fun to watch then this film could be a contender, but don't watch it if you're expecting McCarthy at her best.
This film had so much promise in the lead up to it's release, having such an amazing duo behind the idea. But sadly I was left disappointed at the cinema and felt ultimately cheated out of a potentially quirky new comedy. Hopefully McCarthy's next film will live up to her previously more successful roles.
Until next time,
Charlotte.
