'A game of truth or dare, without the truth' and wow do those dares escalate quickly! Initially we follow introvert Vee (short for Venus played by Emma Roberts) as she is challenged by her best friend to come out of her comfort zone and push herself. This confrontation is what propels Vee into joining the latest social phenomenon 'Nerve'. During one dare she meets another player Ian (Dave Franco)and together they team up and plan to win the game! However as the dares get more ridiculous and the complications of the game start to take their toll, can Vee overcome it all and beat the game?!

This films narrative really draws you in, starting slowly by and gradually revealing more information about each of the characters as the film progresses, whilst the dares tone down the drama and keep the film at a good action pace. I think the concept for the film is really engaging, especially for the modern teen audience, particularly because the game is founded and played via an app. The mix of genre also has a good balance between action, drama and romance, thus adding to its appeal and narrative arc. Roberts and Franco have a well established chemistry on screen and add an endearing note to the story.

Big round of applause for the cinematographer! (whoop whoop) The stylised used of bright pulsing neon colours, adds a sophisticated flare to the film and brings this world of social 'daring' to life. The sequences throughout the film are really well shot and edited and they also blend together well with the soundtrack.

It's disappointing that the climax of the film was very unrealistic and quickly resolved. With the pace of film I was really excited to see this 'final round' but it was anti-climatic and left the film feeling rushed with it's final dare not having time to make an impact. I did enjoy it however, I was pleasantly surprised by it's style and genre. To conclude I think that this may be the perfect 'first date' film, as it has appropriate elements from a variety of genres that pleases and captivates a teen audience.

Until next time,
Charlotte.
