My Top 10 favourite films of all time!
Every film lover has their list of favourite films that they could watch over and over again! As my first ever post I thought it would only be right to share my all-time favourites with you! Consider this an insight into the genre of films i'm interested in as well as the directors I idolise!
1. Say Anything (1989)
This film just makes me smile! Cameron Crowe's vision and interpretation of a coming-of-age teen romance just really hits the mark here. The story is well developed and accurate, pulling the viewer in at every twist and moment. Cusack's character 'Lloyd Dobler' is the perfect man! Sweet, funny and charming he is the real star of this story, and you can't blame 'Diane Court' for falling for this under-dog character type. This is not your average teen rom-com either, there are debates, fights, twists, and heartbreak along the way. Easy to follow and enjoyable, I recommend to all!
2. The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Wow! This film really breaks every rule in terms of telling a story chronologically! However if watch out for when Kate Winslet's hair changes colour, you may be able to piece this wonderful story together. This films asks it's viewers to think about, if given the option, who in their life would they choose to forget? This film really delves deep into this subject matter and explores t through an incredible cast and detailed storyline! The visuals and cinematography of this films also really stands out to me of that of quality filmmaking!
3. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
A favourite films list wouldn't be complete without a Disney entry. Everyone has a favourite animated classic, and to me Beauty and the Beast is the ultimate favourite. The message to this film is a really important lesson to any viewer 'beauty is found within' and the values with accompany that such as kindness and honesty, are what make Belle my favourite Disney princess too. The magic and transformation at the end of the film really impressed me as a child and to this day it's one of my favourite scenes in the film. As well as the AMAZING musical numbers, which really brings life and energy to this film.
4. Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Baz Luhrmann is one of my favourite directors! The idea to put a modern soundtrack and setting to a period story, really gives his work an edge. Romeo and Juliet is the classic love story that ends in tragedy; this beautiful rendition of the Shakespeare play brings the love story into the modern age, really appealing to the more current audiences. The grand settings and costumes, as well as keeping in the original shakespearian dialogue only enhances how timeless this story is. With a cracking cast including Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes as the two leads, this film proves itself to be worthy of any top ten list.
5. Grease (1978)
This film should never be remade! It's perfect just the way it is, and lets face it, no one can beat John Travolta as the stud that is Danny Zuko! This film is great! The songs are great, the cast is great, the dance scenes are great, and it's a film that embodies the 50s era! It's style and energy as a film bring you the ups and downs of Danny and Sandy's relationship, all to come together in the end with a flying car! One of the best musicals by far, this film shall remain a real example of how to turn a theatre play into a film! 'Grease lightning, go Grease lightning'
6. The Breakfast Club (1985)
The true 80s classic! John Hughes was the god of the 80s teen films! But out of all the brilliant films that he directed, 'The Breakfast Club' is the one that really stands out to me. The concept is so simple, with it's one setting and limited characters, but the plot and character development in this film really engages the viewer and you really empathise with each and every character. My favourite character is played by Judd Nelson, who is the comedic release of the film, bringing light humour to the serious subjects mentioned in the film. Not one to be missed!
7. Pulp Fiction (1994)
^^ This is the best scene of the whole film! A Tarantino film had to make onto the top ten list! As one of the most current popular directors, Quentin Tarantino really steals the show with this non-linear, stylised, very well written film. Featuring many monologues on life and perspective as well as interlocking stories from mobsters, to boxers, to War heroes. This film really offers up some great camera work and the portrayal of the characters by the superb cast really adds to Tarantino's flare and style as a director.
8. Love Actually (2003)
Best christmas film of all time! A funny, lighthearted and romantic adventure for all viewers and there's a story in there that everyone can relate to. Richard Curtis, is the boss of the British classic romantic-comedy, but 'Love Actually' remains to be my favourite probably because of the exceptional soundtrack and script. Split into several stories the film really explores the ideals of love, and how we go about getting those dream 'happily ever afters'. Trust me, this film was the beginning of the 'New Years Eve' and 'Valentines Day' films, which are done in a very similar style; however 'Love Actually' was the first and most original one, and in my opinion none of these other spin-offs compare to it!
9. We're the Millers (2013)
As the most recent film on my list, this one is definitely a family favourite! We all enjoy sitting in front of the TV for this film! The script is so hilarious it has us all laughing, and Jennifer Anniston and Jason Sudeikis really add to their lead roles with their comedic experience and talent. The story follows them in a trip across country, posing as a traditional family in order to smuggle drugs across the Mexican boarder. Ensuring plenty of sweet and funny moments along the way, we learn the importance of working together and coming together as a family.
10. Forrest Gump (1994)
Finally, my last pick is 'Forrest Gump'. A very interesting plot as we follow a young boy through his entire lifetime, watching grow from boy to man, and from friend to father. You can't help but love Tom Hank's character of 'Forrest', you really empathise with him as we see him undergo every struggle and come out fighting the other side. I really have to also praise the editing in this film too, as our main character gets caught up in many historic events and he's very cleverly added into these timeless moments. This film does make me cry every single time, but that only proves how well this film is made and well the main role is played.
~
That's it! There are many other films that I could add to this list, but sadly the list can't go on forever. I really recommend that you watch any of the films from this list that you haven't seen, and let me know of your favourite films down in the comments.
Until next time,
Charlotte.
